Job Description
About the opportunity
Welo Data is recruiting an English (South Africa) AI Voice Trainer for a remote audio-data collection project.
The project, also referred to by the Employer as Hydrus – Voice Contributor – English (South Africa), involves recording scripted and spontaneous speech in South African English. The recordings may be used to develop synthesized, AI-generated voices for conversational artificial-intelligence products.
This is a project-based freelance opportunity rather than permanent employment. The project is expected to involve two supervised recording sessions of approximately four hours each.
Key responsibilities
• Participate in two supervised recording sessions of approximately four hours each.
• Take live direction from a Session Director through a separate recording platform.
• Record scripted material in a natural and conversational speaking style.
• Record spontaneous speech on assigned topics.
• Maintain a consistent tone, pace and South African English delivery.
• Complete all recordings in the required language and dialect.
• Set up and manage a suitable recording space and audio equipment.
• Monitor recording quality and identify noise, clipping, distortion and other audio issues.
• Follow the project’s technical, performance and recording instructions.
Requirements
• Experience as a voice actor, actor, theatre performer or in a comparable performance role.
• Native or native-equivalent fluency in South African English.
• Ability to read scripts naturally and speak spontaneously in a conversational style.
• Access to a quiet recording space that is free from echo and background noise.
• A dedicated professional-quality microphone for the audition.
• A qualifying USB condenser microphone or XLR microphone with an audio interface for project recording if selected.
• Closed-back monitoring headphones for the supervised recording sessions.
• Ability to self-direct during the audition and follow live direction during the project.
• Ability to deliver recordings without switching into another language or dialect.
The Employer states that built-in laptop microphones, AirPods, earbuds and headsets are not accepted.
Preferred experience
The following would be beneficial but is not stated as mandatory:
• Professional voice-over experience.
• Dubbing, ADR, audiobook or podcasting experience.
• Experience producing natural conversational speech rather than commercial or announcer-style delivery.
• Familiarity with microphone placement and basic audio-quality monitoring.
• An existing home-recording space treated for sound.
